De haven ligt in het noorden van Bonn aan de Midden-Rijn bij Rijnkilometer 658 links en wordt omringd door de Bonnse wijk Graurheindorf. Een kilometer ten noorden mondt de Sieg uit in de Rijn, daar eindigt de Midden-Rijn.
In 1907 richtte August Am Zehnhoff op de hoogte van de huidige Beethovenhalle een handelswerf op. In 1924 verhuisde het bedrijf naar Graurheindorf naar de huidige locatie. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden grote delen van de haven verwoest. Als gevolg daarvan bouwde het bedrijf Am Zehnhoff-Söns de haven opnieuw op en uit. In 2004 richtte het bedrijf samen met de gemeentelijke nutsbedrijven Bonn de Bonner Hafenbetriebe GmbH op en nam het de operationele activiteiten over.
