El puerto está ubicado en el norte de Bonn, en el Medio Rin, en el kilómetro 658 del Rin a la izquierda, y está rodeado por el distrito de Bonn Graurheindorf. Un kilómetro al norte, el Sieg desemboca en el Rin, allí termina el Medio Rin.
En 1907, August Am Zehnhoff fundó un astillero comercial a la altura de la actual Beethovenhalle. En 1924, la empresa se trasladó a Graurheindorf al lugar actual. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se destruyó gran parte del puerto. Posteriormente, la empresa Am Zehnhoff-Söns reconstruyó y amplió el puerto. En 2004, la compañía fundó, junto con la empresa de servicios públicos de Bonn, la Bonner Hafenbetriebe GmbH y asumió la gestión operativa.
