L'edificio sotto vincolo monumentale si trova nel quartiere di Rheda, di fronte alla chiesa parrocchiale cattolica di San Clemente. Dal 1872 è di proprietà della Casa Principesca di Bentheim-Tecklenburg.
Nel 1829/1830 il consigliere principesco Clemens August Rötteken fece costruire il palazzo a lui dedicato. Rötteken era un influente giurista amministrativo ai tempi della Prussia, che contribuì a far sì che la ferrovia Colonia-Minden attraversasse Rheda. Di conseguenza, si insediarono importanti aziende dell'industria della carne e del mobile, portando un rilancio economico nella ex residenza signorile, sempre caratterizzata da un'impronta rurale.
