Il bacino di San Ponç è stato costruito tra il 1949 e il 1957.
Si trova nella valle media del fiume Cardener, nella comarca del Solsonès, al confine con il Bages, nella provincia di Lleida, Catalogna. Fa parte del complesso di bacini del bacino del fiume Llobregat.
È stata sfruttata la depressione formata dal Cardener nel luogo dell'ermita di San Ponç per la costruzione della diga sopra piattaforme strutturali profondamente intagliate dai corsi d'acqua. Si trova incastonato in un prezioso paesaggio di pineta con un'eccellente panoramica a nord della catena del Cadí.
