Het San Ponç-reservoir werd gebouwd tussen 1949 en 1957.
Het is gelegen in de middelste vallei van de rivier de Cardener, in de comarca Solsonés, aan de grens met Bages, in de provincie Lleida, Catalonië. Het maakt deel uit van het geheel van reservoirs van het stroomgebied van de rivier de Llobregat.
De depressie die door de Cardener is gevormd op de plaats van de kapel van San Ponç is benut voor de bouw van de dam op structuren die diep zijn ingesneden door de waterlopen. Het ligt in een prachtig gebied met dennenbossen met een uitstekend uitzicht naar het noorden op de bergketen van Cadí.
