La basilica di Santa Maria di Alicante si trova nella piazza di Santa Maria, nel centro storico della città. È la chiesa più antica di Alicante, in stile gotico dei secoli XV e XVI, sopra i resti della precedente grande moschea.
Secondo la Cronaca di Bendicho, fu il re Alfonso X di Castiglia a consacrare la moschea intorno al 1248 sotto la protezione della Santa Vergine. La nuova costruzione cristiana dovrebbe iniziare intorno al 1280 e proseguire fino al 1308. Questo primo tempio deve essere stato distrutto alla fine del XIV secolo o all'inizio del successivo, poiché sono stati trovati resti del fuoco nelle decorazioni delle volte.
