De basiliek van Santa Maria van Alicante is gelegen op het plein van Santa Maria, in het historische centrum van de stad. Het is de oudste kerk van Alicante, in gotische stijl uit de 15e en 16e eeuw, boven de resten van de vroegere grote moskee.
Volgens de Kroniek van Bendicho was het koning Alfons X van Castilië die de moskee rond 1248 wijdde onder de bescherming van de Heilige Maagd. De nieuwe christelijke bouw zou rond 1280 beginnen en doorgaan tot 1308. Deze eerste tempel moet zijn vernietigd aan het einde van de 14e eeuw of het begin van de volgende, aangezien er resten van de brand in de decoraties van de gewelven zijn gevonden.
