Lunéville è il luogo di nascita del famoso cartografo Joseph François Ferraris. Più specificamente, nacque alla corte lorena di Lunéville. Era di origine nobiliare, ma non era il primogenito e quindi non aveva diritto alle terre ereditarie. Ferraris attese la quasi nomade esistenza a cui erano condannati migliaia di nobili nell'Europa del XVIII secolo. I giovani senza titolo eredita dovevano cercare di farsi un nome. E sicuramente lo fece.
La sua imperatrice Maria Teresa non disdegnava un po' di guerra. Dopo una sconfitta in guerra, ritenne che la soluzione non stesse in un ulteriore scambio di colpi, ma in carte migliori, cosa che Ferraris poteva confermare. Troppo spesso gli eserciti austriaci si erano trovati intrappolati in imboscate perché non conoscevano il terreno.
