Questo sito romano a Barbegal è la più grande fabbrica antica ad energia idrica del mondo. Uno studio pubblicato nel 2018 afferma che questo sito era specializzato in biscotti da nave, e non nella produzione di farina per la vicina città romana di Arelate. L'analisi dei depositi ha mostrato che i mulini hanno chiuso a fine estate e in autunno. Una città avrebbe avuto bisogno di una fornitura di farina tutto l'anno. Questa teoria presuppone che la farina fosse destinata ai biscotti da nave delle navi romane nel Mediterraneo. Non ci sarebbe stata domanda per questo in inverno, quando la flotta si rifugiava per evitare le tempeste.
