A nord di Périgueux nel Périgord Vert, la Grotte di Villars è uno dei più grandi sistemi sotterranei della Dordogne (oltre 13 km esplorati fino ad oggi). Sala dei Bénitiers, sala delle Candele, Grande balcone, … le acque di infiltrazione hanno creato un decorato straordinario: le volte, le pareti e i pavimenti sono ricoperti di calcite, sottili stalattiti e innumerevoli stalagmiti, meravigliose draperie e colate eccentriche.
La Grotte di Villars ospita un altro tesoro, pitture preistoriche realizzate 17.000 anni fa con manganese e ocra, applicate con il dito, con un pennello di peli o soffiando in polvere. Alcune, come la rotonda dei cavalli, sono coperte da una sottile pellicola di calcite che conferisce loro un colore blu particolare. Da scoprire con emozione: la scena del bisonte e dello stregone, rara rappresentazione umana dell'arte preistorica.
