Nel 1410, il castello di Helfenstein, con i suoi annessi e i villaggi di Butten, Kirspach e Birsbach, era un feudo dei duchi di Lorena. Sessant'anni dopo, quando il feudo fu rinnovato, non si parlava più del castello ma solo del monte Helfenstein. Nel frattempo, probabilmente, era stato distrutto o abbandonato. Oggi rimangono solo le mura, una cisterna e le scale scavate nella roccia arenaria dei Vosgi.

Il percorso di accesso è segnalato da Philippsbourg. Dal parcheggio allestito dall'Office National des Forêts vicino alla strada, si può raggiungere la rovina in venti minuti a piedi.
