En 1410, el castillo de Helfenstein, con sus dependencias y los pueblos de Butten, Kirspach y Birsbach, era un feudo de los duques de Lorena. Sesenta años más tarde, cuando se renovó el feudo, ya no se mencionaba el castillo, sino sólo el monte Helfenstein. Mientras tanto, probablemente había sido destruido o abandonado. Hoy sólo quedan los muros, una cisterna y las escaleras excavadas en la roca arenisca de los Vosgos.
Cómo llegar :
La ruta de acceso está señalizada desde Philippsbourg. Desde el aparcamiento habilitado por la Office National des Forêts cerca de la carretera, se tarda veinte minutos en llegar a pie a la ruina.
