On the same rocky ridge, next to the Falkenstein Castle, stands the Helfenstein Castle, "the stone that helps".1410, the Helfenstein Castle, with its outbuildings and the villages of Butten, Kirspach and Birsbach, was a fief of the Dukes of Lorraine. Sixty years later, when the fief was renewed, there was no longer any mention of the castle but only of the Helfenstein mountain. In the meantime, it had probably been destroyed or abandoned. All that remains today are the walls, a cistern and the stairs cut into the Vosges sandstone rock.
