In 1410 was kasteel Helfenstein met zijn bijgebouwen en de dorpen Butten, Kirspach en Birsbach een leengoed van de hertogen van Lotharingen. Zestig jaar later, toen het leengoed werd vernieuwd, was er geen sprake meer van het kasteel, maar alleen van de berg Helfenstein. In de tussentijd was het waarschijnlijk vernietigd of verlaten. Alles wat er nu nog van over is, zijn de muren, een stortbak en de trappen die in de zandsteenrots van de Vogezen zijn uitgehouwen.
Hoe er te komen :
De toegangsweg is bewegwijzerd vanuit Philippsbourg. Vanaf de parkeerplaats die het Office National des Forêts vlakbij de weg heeft aangelegd, is het twintig minuten lopen naar de ruïne.
