Al centro della piazza si trova un monumento in marmo bianco dedicato a Ferdinando I de' Medici. La statua, realizzata da Pietro Francavilla su disegno del Giambologna, fu inizialmente collocata accanto alle "spallette" del Lungarno, ma fu spostata nell'attuale sede dopo la riqualificazione delle sponde nel 1872. Davanti a questa statua, fino al 1595, sorgeva una statua dedicata a Rodolfo Orlandi, console ed eroe della Repubblica (detto Il Gigante dai Pisani dell'epoca).
In fondo alla piazza si trovano alcuni antichi palazzi cinquecenteschi, sedi di istituzioni: il collegio Ricci, il palazzo Mazzarosa, il teatro Ernesto Rossi, e il settecentesco palazzo Pellegrino, sede dell'Intendenza di Finanza. A sinistra, la parte absidale della Chiesa di San Nicola, la cui facciata si affaccia su via Santa Maria.
Ora sulla piazza è presente un ampio parcheggio a pagamento.
