La tipica bonifica torbosa in quest'area e nell'area adiacente dei conti di Olanda era la bonifica cope. Il "cope" era il contratto che stabiliva diritti e doveri dei contadini. I proprietari terrieri assegnavano appezzamenti di torba di misure fisse, accuratamente misurati da topografi. La misura più comune era un appezzamento di circa 1.250 metri di lunghezza e 113 metri di larghezza (circa 14 ettari). Una volta che il drenaggio era stato sistemato, la vegetazione sulla torba veniva bruciata e dopo un po' di tempo il terreno poteva essere utilizzato come pascolo o terreno agricolo. La parola "cope" è riconoscibile in molti nomi di luoghi nella torba. Pensa a Nieuwkoop, Papekop, Boskoop o Boeicop.
