The characteristic peat extraction in this area and in the adjacent area of the counts of Holland was the cope extraction. The 'cope' was the contract that set out the rights and obligations of the farmers. The landowners allocated pieces of peat area with fixed measurements, precisely measured by surveyors. The most common size was a plot of about 1,250 meters long and 113 meters wide (approximately 14 hectares). Once the drainage was arranged, the vegetation on the peat was burned, and after some time, the land could then be used as pasture or arable land. The word 'cope' can be recognized in many place names in the peat area. Think of Nieuwkoop, Papekop, Boskoop, or Boeicop.
