La prima cappella in legno in questa posizione fu costruita all'inizio del XIV secolo, appartenente alla chiesa di Leiderdorp. Nella seconda metà del XIV secolo c'è una forte necessità di una chiesa più grande nelle terre alte (hoog land) la cui costruzione inizia nel 1377. La chiesa è quasi scelta per essere la terza cattedrale nei Paesi Bassi, ma deve passare in quanto infine quel ruolo viene assegnato alla chiesa di St. Bavo ad Haarlem nel 1535. I lavori di ampliamento della chiesa furono interrotti lasciando la chiesa in uno stato di "incompiuta". Se l'edificio fosse stato completato, sarebbe stata una delle più grandi cattedrali gotiche d'Europa.
Nel corso degli anni sono stati effettuati numerosi grandi lavori di ristrutturazione, dal 1840 al 1903 e dal 1952 al 1972. Molti dettagli originali sono stati preservati.
La chiesa è un monumento ed è talvolta aperta ai visitatori.
