Il monumento ricorda che qui la Regina Wilhelmina rimise piede sul suolo olandese il 13 marzo 1945, dopo cinque anni di esilio durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. I residenti del quartiere tracciarono allora un confine simbolico con della farina. La Seconda Guerra Mondiale ha lasciato profonde cicatrici in West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen con molte vittime e enormi danni materiali.
