Il nome Mariënwaerdt significa l'isola (waard) di Maria. La storia della tenuta risale al 1129, quando fu fondata un'abbazia norbertina. Gli edifici principali di quest'abbazia si trovavano a 't Klooster, nel luogo dove ora sorge la Casa Mariënwaerdt.
Nel corso degli anni, quest'abbazia divenne un monastero molto ricco. Dopo la riforma, nel 1734, il monastero passò nelle mani della famiglia Van Bylandt, acquisendo anche lo status di 'Alta Signoria'. I discendenti di questa famiglia sono ancora oggi proprietari e gestiscono/sfruttano l'attuale Tenuta Signoria Mariënwaerdt. L'accesso alla villa è segnato all'inizio della Notenlaan da un elegante cancello d'ingresso. La villa è stata costruita nel XVIII secolo sulle rovine dell'ex abbazia, di cui le cantine con archi a crociera sono ancora visibili.
