El nombre Mariënwaerdt significa la isla (waard) de María. La historia de la finca se remonta a 1129, cuando se fundó una abadía norbertina. Los edificios principales de esta abadía se encontraban en 't Klooster, en el lugar donde ahora está la Casa Mariënwaerdt.
A lo largo de los años, esta abadía creció hasta convertirse en un monasterio muy rico. Después de la Reforma, el monasterio pasó en 1734 a manos de la familia Van Bylandt, adquiriendo así el estatus de ‘Alta Señorialidad’. Los descendientes de esta familia son todavía propietarios y gestionan/explotan la actual Finca Señoría Mariënwaerdt. El acceso a la propiedad se marca al principio de la Notenlaan con una hermosa puerta de entrada. La mansión fue construida en el siglo XVIII sobre las bóvedas de la antigua abadía, cuyas bodegas con arcos aún se pueden ver.
