The name Mariënwaerdt means the island (waard) of Maria. The history of the estate dates back to 1129, when a Norbertine abbey was founded. The main buildings of this abbey were located at 't Klooster, at the site where the House Mariënwaerdt stands now.
Over the years, this abbey grew into a very wealthy monastery. After the Reformation, the monastery came into the hands of the Van Bylandt family in 1734, also gaining the status of ‘High Lordship’. Descendants of this family are still the owners and manage/exploit the current Estate of High Lordship Mariënwaerdt. Access to the estate is marked at the beginning of the Notenlaan by an elegant entrance gate. The country house was built in the 18th century on the vaults of the former abbey, of which the cellars with cross arches are still visible.
