Separata dal mare da una laguna, è un porto di pesca e località turistica dell'Algarve sulla costa atlantica. È sede vescovile e universitaria.Già insediamento romano, fu fondata dagli Arabi e poi conquistata da Dom Alfonso III nel 1249. Ottenne lo statuto di città, raggiungendo in breve prosperità come centro economico. Nel XV secolo furono prodotti i primi libri a stampa del Portogallo in un'azienda della numerosa comunità ebraica esistente nella città. Passata sotto il dominio degli Spagnoli, nel 1596 fu distrutta dall'armata inglese al comando di Robert Devereux, II conte d'Essex che si dirigeva a Cadice. Fu ricostruita ma subì altri danni dal grave terremoto che sconvolse il territorio portoghese nel 1755. Fu di nuovo ricostruita e dotata di nuovi eleganti edifici grazie all'impegno del vescovo Francisco Gomes do Avelar .
