Nazarje è dal 1994 un comune indipendente nella regione slovena di Savinjska e conta 2754 abitanti. In alcune parti del comune, il trasporto di legname era una importante fonte di reddito fino alla Prima Guerra Mondiale.
A Nazarje si trova il castello di Vrbovec, noto in antiche fonti con il nome tedesco di Altenburg. Il castello sorse all'ingresso della Dreta nella Savinja. La prima menzione del castello risale al 1248. L'aspetto attuale di Vrbovec risale al periodo intorno ai lavori di ristrutturazione del 1480. Inizialmente era di proprietà dei patriarchi di Aquileia, successivamente dei conti di Celje e infine - fino al 1615 - passò in mano agli Asburgo. Nel 1615 il castello fu acquistato dal vescovato di Lubiana, che lo mantenne fino alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
