La Biblioteca apostolica vaticana è la biblioteca che la Santa Sede ha organizzato e curato in Vaticano a partire dal Quattrocento; possiede una delle raccolte di testi antichi e di libri rari fra le più importanti al mondo risalenti al I secolo d.C.
La documentazione storica attesta l'esistenza nel IV secolo di uno Scrinium, che doveva essere sia la biblioteca sia l'archivio della Chiesa latina, mentre un documento del 784 parla del bibliothecarius Teofilatto. Lo Scrinium papale andò comunque disperso nel XIII secolo e le successive raccolte librarie, di cui esiste un inventario realizzato durante il papato di Bonifacio VIII , subirono gravi perdite dopo la sua morte in seguito ai continui spostamenti . In Francia, Giovanni XXII avviò una nuova biblioteca, in parte confluita nel Seicento in quella della famiglia Borghese e ritornata con questa nel 1891 alla Santa Sede.
