De gezellige kern Retranchement kan prat gaan op een rijk verleden. Prins Maurits stichtte het dorpje in de zeventiende eeuw, dat letterlijk 'verschansing' of 'bolwerk' betekent. De aarden wallen en het oude fort van Nassau moesten er toen de Spanjaarden buiten houden. Ook nu is de kern nog steeds springlevend. Voor de voorzitter van de dorpsraad Jurrien Kruidhof is de samenhorigheid van Retranchement de grootste troef. 'We staan hier allemaal voor elkaar klaar en onze verenigingen versterken ons gemeenschapsgevoel.
