Keizer Franz I. Stephan overleed op 18 augustus 1765 onverwachts aan een beroerte in de Innsbrucker Hofburg, terwijl de regerende familie ter gelegenheid van de bruiloft van aartsduke Leopold met Maria Ludovica van Spanje in Innsbruck verbleef. Zijn echtgenote Maria Theresia was hier zeer van geschokt en rouwde diep om hem. "Ter eeuwige nagedachtenis" oprichtte ze nog in hetzelfde jaar op de plek waar haar man was overleden de wereldlijke adellijke damesstichting.
