De beroemdste inwoner van Tongeren is ongetwijfeld Ambiorix, koning der Eburonen. We hebben het aan hem te danken dat Julius Caesar de Belgen de ‘dappersten aller Galliërs’ noemde. Ja, Caesar heeft serieus klop gekregen van de Belgae, maar de Romeinse overmacht bleek uiteindelijk te groot. Ambiorix kon vluchten, lees: hij verdween spoorloos. Zelfs in die mate dat historici eraan twijfelen of hij wel echt bestaan heeft. Ondanks de scepsis kreeg Ambiorix in 1866 een standbeeld.
