Schoorsteenvegers, goudsmeden, stoelenmakers… de straten van het Cité Hellemans-complex verwijzen naar de oude ambachten van volkswijk de Marollen. Bij de opening in 1915 is Cité Hellemans, vernoemd naar architect Émile Hellemans, het eerste belangrijke sociale huisvestingsproject beheerd door de stad Brussel.
In de loop van de 20ste eeuw volgen nog heel wat sociale huisvestingsprojecten in de buurt. Vandaag zijn de Marollen een van de meest diverse, multiculturele wijken van het gewest. Bewoners en bezoekers vinden elkaar op de dagelijkse vlooienmarkt op het Vossenplein. Daar vind je alles, van echte rommel en mooie stukken antiek tot een tweede-, derde- of vierdehandsfiets.
TIP: Zie je de klim naar het Justitiepaleis niet zitten, neem dan de lift voor fietsers en voetgangers aan het Bruegelplein.
