Als je hier een totaal ander type bomen en struiken aantreft, dan is dat te danken aan Leopold II. Naast de gebruikeijlke beuken tref je hier dennen en sequoia's aan. Ze zijn zelfs geördend volgens een wereldkaart.
Het Arboretum is een experiment van Leopold II. In 1902 liet de koning honderden boomsoorten uit de continten van het noordelijk halfrond naar Tervuren verplanten om te kijken welke bomen hier konden overleven en welke men dan zou kunnen aanplanten in België.
