De Moervaart (vroeger de Moere genaamd) werd oorspronkelijk in de Middeleeuwen (rond 1300) gegraven door de abdij van Boudelo, aanvankelijk om de afwatering van de Moervaartdepressie te verbeteren. Om de moeilijk bevaarbare Zuidlede te vermijden voor het transport van turf, dat in dit gebied gewonnen werd, is ze in de 15e eeuw eveneens bevaarbaar gemaakt. Door de aanleg van het kanaal Gent-Terneuzen in 1825 werd de verbinding verbroken met de natuurlijke bovenlopen: de Poekebeek (die ontspringt in Tielt) en Oude of Hoge Kale, die ontsprong te Sint-Joris, Beernem.
