Van hier heb je zicht op het militair vliegveld. Sinds 2018 werd een brede verbinding gerealiseerd tussen het vliegveld en natuurreservaat Maldegemveld. De focus bij de werken ligt op het herstel en de versterking van heide en de heraanleg van lichtrijke bosranden. Zo wordt zowel het aanwezige bos als de heide rijker aan planten- en diersoorten én kwaliteitsvoller. Naast de natuurwaarde zal ook de belevingswaarde verhogen.. In 1953, in volle Koude Oorlog, legt de NAVO een vliegveld aan om mogelijke aanvallen van het Sovjetblok te helpen afslaan. Hierbij kregen 190 hectare bosgebied de bestemming van militair domein. Vandaag is het een niet-actieve NAVO-basis die gecategoriseerd staat als reservevliegveld van de Belgische luchtmacht. Tegenwoordig wordt het enkel in het weekend nog gebruikt voor recreatieve vliegerij.
