Het is ter hoogte van Nederbrakel dat de verschillende bovenlopen van de Zwalm samenvloeien tot de Zwalm. Vanaf die buurt kan men spreken van de middenloop van de Zwalm. Niet helemaal toevallig dus dat er in die buurt een, althans voor zijn omgeving, vrij groot drassig gebied is onstaan. Dit gebied wordt door natuurpunt benoemd met een toponiem dat we terugvinden op de kadastrale plannen: 'Jansveld'.
