Het fort Eben-Emael is nog altijd een militair domein. Gelegen aan het Albertkanaal was het een belangrijk strategisch punt van de Belgische verdediging in het oosten. De belangrijkste taak van het fort was de overtocht te verbieden van het Albertkanaal en de Maas. Ook het zogenaamde "Gat van Visé" ten zuiden van het fort werd verdedigd. Vandaag worden er niet enkel bezoeken georganiseerd in het fort, maar vinden we er ook een gespecialiseerd museum met materiaal, uniformen, wapens, enz. uit 1940. Het kan beschouwd worden als het museum van de slag van het Albertkanaal op 10 en 11 mei 1940 waarbij meer dan 700 Belgische soldaten omkwamen.
