'Lone Tree Cemetery' is genoemd naar de vlakbij ingeslagen 'Lone Tree Crater' (ook wel 'Spanbroekmolenkrater' of 'Pool of peace' genoemd), één van de 19 kraters die ontstonden op 7 juni 1917, de befaamde Mijnenslag. De mijn bij de Spanbroekmolen zou echter enkele seconden later ontploft zijn, zodat de mannen van de 'Royal Irish Rifles' ('36ste Ulster Division'), die op het aangegeven tijdstip van 03.10u 's morgens dus te vroeg de loopgraven verlieten, door de eigen mijn getroffen werden. Bijna alle graven bevatten doden van die 7de juni, waarbij 60 van de 88 doden behoorden tot de 'Royal Irish Rifles' ('36th Division').
