Dit is een straat die eigenlijk ‘ Damanstraat’ zou moeten heten. De arbeidersfamilie, actief in het verzet. In februari 1944 viel de Gestapo binnen in hun woning aan de Pleinstraat. De vader werd via Breendonk gedeporteerd naar Buchenwald. Dochter Hortense en haar moeder kwam in Ravensbruck terecht. Zij overleefden allemaal het concentratiekamp. Hortense huwde in 1946 met de Britse soldaat Syd Clews, die ze als weerstandster tijdens de oorlog had helpen ontvluchten naar Engeland. In haar nieuwe woonplaats Newcastle-under-Lyme werd de straat Clews Walk naar haar genoemd. Mark Bles wijdde een boek aan haar verzetsleven onder de titel : Child at War, in het Nederlands vertaald en uitgegeven door de Standaard uitgeverij.
