Het kunstwerk is een mansgroot bronzen sculptuur. Het werd gerealiseerd op basis van ondermeer fotomateriaal uit de jaren begin ’60 van de toenmalige champetter Petrus Ferbiest. “Ik bezocht de familie van de laatste champetter. Zij hadden voor mij nog de jas van het originele uniform en enkele oude foto's” zegt Christa Alaert.
Het beeld is gemaakt door uit een blok materie weg te halen. Dat vergt vooraf het nodige studie- en schetswerk om alles goed gepositioneerd te krijgen. Eind juli was het beeld klaar en werd het naar de bronsgieter gebracht om het volgens het verloren-was-procedé te gieten.
