Opgericht in 1875 naar de plannen van de landschaparchitect Édouard Keilig, die ook het Bois de la Cambre ontwierp, ligt het op een stuk van de Soignes van ongeveer dertig ha. De gouden periode van deze instelling duurt van 1880 tot 1940. Daarna ging het mis: de paarden maakten in 1995 een laatste rondje op het parcours en de site werd geleidelijk aan verlaten, met uitzondering van een golfbaan die sinds 1988 in het midden van de enorme ovale piste is gevestigd.
