Vooral de Handzamebroek (yussen Barisdam en Handzame), waar de Handzamevaart nog kronkelt of meandert, oefent een sterke aantrekkingskracht uit op watervogels en steltlopers. Dit gebied staat immers niet onder directe invloed van de pompstations en overstroomt nog vrij regelmatig op een oppervlakte van enkele tientallen hectaren. De vallei is veel meer dan een overwinteringsgebied voor waterwild. Het is ook een waardevol gebied voor tal van roofvogels. In het broedseizoen is de vallei belangrijk voor tal van soorten. Naast vogels zijn de typische planten van een valleigebied erg afhankelijk van dat water. Tegenwoordig zijn vooral de grote vossestaart en zijn verwant, de geknikte vossestaart, aspectbepalend. De vossestaart is een vroegbloeiende grassoort die in mei en juni de velden van roomwit tot paars kleurt.
