Deze regelmatige bezoeker van onze vijvers is bij het grote publiek de bekendste eend. Zijn Franse naam (‘colvert’) verwijst naar de groene kleur van de kraag van het mannetje. Het mannetje verschilt ook van het vrouwtje door zijn witte halsband en gele snavel. Het verenkleed van het vrouwtje is overwegend bruin en beige. Net als het mannetje heeft het vrouwtje een donkerblauwe zogenaamde vleugelspiegel, een gekleurde vlek op beide vleugels. Over het algemeen zijn de vogels sedentair en vanaf de herfst vormen ze paren tijdens de balts.
