Hier laat de directe omgeving van he kanaal bijna geen ruimte over voor de natuur. Oeverbeplanting in schanskorven (metalen korven) die op de oevermuren worden bevestigd, zorgt voor verfraaiing en vergroening van de waterwegen en neemt bovendien heel weinig plaats in. In samenwerking met het Waalse Maison de la Pêche heeft de stad Luik bij wijze van pilootproject oevers van een tak van de Maas en een havendok op die manier aangepakt. De wortels van de halfwaterminnende planten (iris, liesgrassen,...) van die oevers zijn trouwens goed voor de ontwikkeling van het leven in het water (larven, vissen,...).
