In 1731 brandde het Paleis Op de Coudenberg af, waar sinds de 13e eeuw de heersers van Bourgondië, Brabant, Spanje en Oostenrijk hadden geregeerd. Op 24 december 1654 bekeerde koningin Christina van Zweden zich hier in het geheim tot het rooms-katholieke geloof. De viering vond plaats in de privékapel van Aartshertog Leopold Wilhelm van Oostenrijk. Tegenwoordig vind je hier het Belvue Museum.
