Het Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen biedt de grootste bos- en heidegebieden in Vlaanderen. Alweer loop je hier een kleine dag (15 km) zonder één huis tegen te komen en voor 85 % over zand. Neem dus wat mondvoorraad mee. Onderweg krijg je ondermeer een prachtige blik op een grindgroeve die deels natuurgebied geworden is, op de legendarische Mechelse Heide en op het Kolenspoor dat decennia lang het zwarte goud naar het Albertkanaal voerde. Soms waan je je in de Ardennen.
Starten doe je bij het voormalig station van As, dat nu een café én een toegangspoort van het Nationaal Park geworden is.
