De oude stad van Kassel in de huidige stadswijk Mitte behoorde vóór de oorlogsvernietigingen vanaf 1943 en de sloop in de naoorlogse periode tot de belangrijkste steden van Midden-Europa. Het centrum van de middeleeuwse stad was de Altmarkt. Weinig gebouwen van het oude stadscentrum zijn na de bombardementen op Kassel bewaard gebleven. De herbouw die in de jaren vijftig en zestig plaatsvond, is tot op de dag van vandaag bepalend. Sommige naoorlogse ensembles staan onder monumentenzorg, zoals aan de Treppenstraße.
