De Plauer See behoort tot het merengebied in Brandenburg aan de Havel, waartoe naast de Plauer bijvoorbeeld ook het Quenzmeer, het Breitlingmeer, het Mösersche Meer en het Wendmeer behoren. Het wordt doorkruist door de Havel en beslaat een oppervlakte van ongeveer 640 ha. De maximale diepte wordt aangegeven met 6,7 m.
De naam van de Plauer See is afgeleid van de wijk Plaue van de stad Brandenburg aan de Havel. De naam van het stadje is waarschijnlijk afkomstig van het Oud-Poolse plavati, wat vertaald kan worden als vlotten, afdrijven. Het voormalig zelfstandige vissersstadje ligt aan de noordwestkant van het meer. Aan deze oever, aan de uitmonding van de Havel, ligt het beroemde kasteel Plaue met zijn park.
