Het versteende bos van Chemnitz is een belangrijke paleobotanische fossielenlocatie. De in het Museum voor Natuurgeschiedenis Chemnitz tentoongestelde vondsten behoren tot de bezienswaardigheden van de stad.
Al in 1546 berichtte de burgemeester en geleerde Georgius Agricola uit Chemnitz in zijn werk De natura fossilium over stammen van vele bomen die in steen waren veranderd en hij rapporteerde verder over het Zeisigwaldtuff als bouwmateriaal.
