Leefgebied
Het is een groot rund dat vroeger in grote groepen op de vlaktes van Noord-Mexico, de Verenigde Staten en Canada leefde, van het Grote Slaawemeer tot Mexico en van het oostelijke Oregon tot de Appalachen. Er zijn twee ondersoorten: de vlaktesbison (B. b. bison) en de bosbison (B. b. athabascae) van Canada.
Sinds het begin van de eeuw wettelijk beschermd om te voorkomen dat het uitstierf, leeft het nu in reservaten in de grote nationale parken van de Verenigde Staten.
