De oorsprong van het gebouw zelf vormt het eerste probleem. Volgens de kronieken is het gebouwd op bevel van Alfons II van Asturië, hoewel studies uitgevoerd door verschillende historici bevestigen dat het waarschijnlijk werd gerealiseerd door Fernando I van León. Daarom dateert het gebouw uit het midden van de 11e eeuw. In ieder geval zijn er van deze periode nog maar weinig resten over.
