De voormalige gemeente Sort was een gemeentelijk gebied van de streek Pallars Sobirà dat in 1970 en 1976 werd uitgebreid met de oude gemeenten Altron, Enviny en Llessui.
De gemeente Sort werd opgericht in 1812 op basis van de bepalingen van de Grondwet van Cádiz en is altijd behouden gebleven, eerst met het oorspronkelijke oppervlak, en vanaf 1970 en 1976, aanzienlijk uitgebreid. Ook werden in 1812 het gemeentehuis van de Bastida de Sort opgericht, dat in 1847 aan Sort werd toegevoegd. Het omvatte ook de dorpen Bressui en Pernui, waarvan de laatste momenteel volledig ontvolkt is, en een zeer oude ontvolkte plaats die de traditie associeert met de oorsprong van Sort: de stad Vilamflor.
