Het plein ligt tegen "La Catedral" en draagt de naam van de beroemde man uit Granada die in zijn jonge jaren metgezel was van de beroemde Velázquez met wie hij de moeilijke kunst van het beeldhouwen leerde, en wiens marmeren beeld het plein versierd.
